The intent of this public event is to share how tracking marine animals can help to conserve these species. The trackers collect information that we cannot get any other way because of how far the animals can swim across ocean basins, sometimes diving down deeper than a kilometer along the way!
Scientists can then analyse the information from the tags to understand the animals' behaviour, or movement ecology. Armed with this information, they can contribute to conservation by motivating to reduce important threats (like fishing) in key areas (like important feeding sites).
Through this event, we also hope to inspire budding marine scientists to fulfil their dreams, and give a taste of the kind of career they could have tracking animals around the world.
... and haven't you just wondered what's out there in Algoa Bay?
